Place Value
Year 1 children will develop their understanding of numbers and place value.
They will learn to:
Count forwards and backwards
Read and write numbers
Recognise numbers using objects, pictures and number lines
Count one more and one less
Compare groups and numbers
Use the language greater than, less than and equal to
Order numbers from smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest
Understand the value of each number
Develop confidence working with numbers within 10 and 20
Addition & Subtraction
Children will also begin to develop their addition and subtraction skills.
They will learn to:
Understand the part-whole relationship
Find different ways of making a number
Write and understand number sentences
Use the + , – and = symbols
Add two numbers together
Find a missing part
Understand subtraction as taking away
Understand subtraction as finding the difference
Use practical equipment, pictures and number lines to solve calculations
Recall and use simple number facts with increasing confidence
Solve simple mathematical problems
