🌱 Reception Maths – Autumn Term

During the Autumn Term, Reception children will begin to develop a strong understanding of early number.

We will focus on:

  • Matching and sorting objects

  • Comparing groups and quantities

  • Recognising and creating simple patterns

  • Counting objects carefully, saying one number for each object

  • Recognising small quantities without always needing to count

  • Understanding the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5

  • Representing numbers in different ways using objects, fingers, pictures and marks

  • Comparing numbers and quantities using language such as more, fewer and the same

  • Finding one more and one less

  • Exploring how numbers can be made in different ways

  • Developing an understanding of zero

  • Comparing size, length, weight and capacity

  • Exploring and talking about simple shapes

  • Using positional language during play and everyday activities

We encourage children to talk about what they notice and explain their mathematical thinking.
