English
In our English lessons, we follow the Literacy Tree scheme to support and inspire children's writing. This rich and engaging approach allows us to explore a wide range of text types—from narratives and poetry to persuasive writing and non-fiction reports. Each unit is carefully designed to link grammar and punctuation objectives to the text being studied, ensuring children learn these skills in meaningful and contextualised ways. Through this, pupils develop both technical accuracy and creative flair in their writing.
Reading for just 15 minutes a day can significantly enhance children's vocabulary, which in turn supports their ability to understand and engage with new texts. To encourage this, each child has a reading book and a reading diary to help track their progress throughout the year. I warmly encourage you to listen to your child read aloud and take an active role in their reading journey. Asking questions about what they’ve read is a great way to build their comprehension skills and deepen their understanding of the text.
Maths
In our maths lessons, Years 5 and 6 follow the White Rose Maths curriculum, while Year 4 join Year 3 in using the NCETM materials. Both approaches offer a clear and well-structured progression that supports the development of mathematical understanding. We also incorporate Maths Mastery principles to strengthen pupils’ reasoning and problem-solving skills. Children are introduced to key concepts through small, carefully sequenced steps, helping them to build fluency, confidence, and a deeper grasp of mathematical ideas. Lessons include opportunities to represent maths in different ways, use mathematical vocabulary, and apply their learning to real-life contexts. This approach ensures all children develop a secure and lasting understanding of mathematical ideas.
