Ash Class Rec/Y1
We are delighted to welcome you to Ash Class, a mixed-age class of EYFS and Year One.
Our curriculum is built around four guiding principles:
- Every child is unique
- Positive relationships help children feel secure and confident.
- Enabling environments encourage exploration and learning.
- Learning and development are achieved through a balance of play and adult-led activities.
We work closely with families to ensure that each child's needs are met, providing opportunities for your child to grow, achieve, and thrive.

Reading Books
Supporting your child with reading
Although your child will be taught to read at school, you can have a huge impact on their reading journey by continuing their practice at home.
There are two types of reading book that your child may bring home:
A reading practice book. This will be at the correct phonic stage for your child. They should be able to read this fluently and independently.
A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together.
Reading practice book
This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.
Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
Sharing book
In order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book they have chosen for you to enjoy together.
Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
We change reading books on Wednesday. Please note that we need to have books returned before we exchange them. Unfortunately, we have to charge £5 for any damaged or lost books.
The children have a separate wallet to keep their reading scheme books in to keep them extra safe.
Your child has a yellow reading record where we will put in the sounds your child is learning and the 'tricky words' they need to read by sight. Please add the title of each book and record when you have listened to your child read and add comments if appropriate. I warmly encourage you to listen to your child read aloud and take an active role in their reading journey. Asking questions about what they’ve read is a great way to build their comprehension skills and deepen their understanding of the text.
Communications
At Oake, Bradford and Nynehead Primary School, we use ClassDojo to communicate with parents - sharing any exciting news and update the Class Story regularly. Parents can also contact teachers through ClassDojo if there are any queries or questions you may have! You can access ClassDojo (login required) through this link: https://www.classdojo.com/
If your child if being collected by someone else please mention this in the morning and if it is a last minute change please phone the office as I am unable to pick up Dojo messages during the day.
Homework
Children are expected to read at home for 5- 10 minutes every day. There are extra phonic sheets on our page that consolidate each weeks learning.
Spelling
Year One children will need to practise spelling the tricky words in their yellow reading records. They will also have weekly spellings sent home on Monday which they will be tested on Friday.
