Spelling

Everyday, as part of our morning challenges, we complete activities linked to a weekly spelling rule. In addition to the spellings on the 'Spelling' page, I have attached the plan for our weekly spellings below.

Do bare in mind, that a few of you have an alternative set of spellings.

Day Task

Monday

Which suffixes could we add to these words?

Observe        Hesitate        Expect          Accept          Assist

Try to add these suffixes to the words above:

-ant           -ancy            -ance

Which work?

Which don't work? Why?

How does the meaning of the word change when you add the suffix?

Tuesday

You will complete this task over 2 days.

Use a dictionary, an adult or the internet to help you define the words.

Fill in the word change chart (below) for observe and accept.

Put the root word in the 'word' box with a short definition after it.

If the suffix can be added to the root word to modify it put it into the right column. You can tell me whether it is a noun (n), verb (v) or adjective (a).

Wednesday

You will complete this task over 2 days.

Use a dictionary, an adult or the internet to help you define the words.

Fill in the word change chart (below) for hesitate and important (put this in the 'word' box still).

Put the root word in the 'word' box with a short definition after it.

If the suffix can be added to the root word to modify it put it into the right column. You can tell me whether it is a noun (n), verb (v) or adjective (a).

What are the rules for adding each suffix? How does it change the word type (noun/verb/adjective)

Thursday

Pick 3 words from here:

hinder           converse           defy            account           apply            buoy

You can play this with someone else if you would like to - you don't have to!

Roll a dice. If it lands on:

1: add -ant suffix

2: add -ance suffix

3: add -ancy suffix

4: add -ing or -ed suffix

5: add a different suffix to the above

6: your choice of which suffix to use

Complete this until you have formed 10 real words

Friday

Get someone to test you on this week's spellings.

If you make any mistakes, can you find out where you went wrong?

Let me know your score.

Remember, you can find this week's spelling list here!
